Fo pas in San Francisco? Essay For Perloff and ACT, it was out of the ethnic frying pan and into the theological fire You couldnt imagine a pair of less conspicuous protesters. Stationed at the narrow entryway of the Marines Memorial Theatre in San Francisco, the two middle-aged men in suits and ties politely, almost shyly, handed out pamphlets to patrons on their way in to see the American Conservatory Theatre production of Dario Fos The Pope and the Witch. But the text of the proffered four-page booklet, expensively printed on heavy cream-colored bond, told a more impassioned story. Written by Wade C. Hughan, a longtime ACT subscriber and president of a church-sanctioned lay group called Catholics for Truth and Justice, the essay roundly bashed ACT for putting on a play which, in Hughans words and emphases, at heart attacks the Church and the Faith of over 800 million people and ridicules the current Pope. That was only one of the many salvos fired in a public flap that raged for weeks in San Francisco, catching up the citys Catholic Archdiocese, the local theatre community and private and corporate arts funders. The conflict embroiled new ACT artistic director Carey Perloff and associate director Richard Seyd in a controversy they never anticipatedand one that seemed curiously tangential to the production itself. The fuss was by no means the first episode in Carey Perloffs baptism by fire. The former head of New Yorks Classic Stage Company assumed artistic control of San Franciscos largest nonprofit theatre last spring, and soon after found herself ensnared in the many-tentacled embrace of the citys highly schismatic, very complicated, extremely tempestuous cultural body politic. Apparently no one had alerted Perloff ahead of time that San Franciscans of various allegiances will rush en masse to the barricades at the first provocation, the least suspicion of inequity or insult. They do it as a matter of honor and principle, but also because crying foul is almost a regional sport. And maybe Perloff didnt realize how quickly one controversy can spawn another in a city that has an historic flair for insider scandals, and a conservative tradition as strong as its better-publicized radical one. (Consider David Belascos production of a Passion Play in the laissez-faire 1870s, which aroused the ire of many churchmen and led to a city ordinance banning any portrayal of Jesus Christ on local stages for the next 50 years.) Perloffs imbroglio began several months ago, when she cut a planned production of Ken Ludwigs Broadway farce Lend Me a Tenor from the 1992-93 season roster. ACT company members (African Americans and others) objected to a scene in which two white opera singers don blackface makeup to appear in Verdis Otello. The play cancellation immediately drew sharp criticism from those who felt Perloff had capitulated to political pressure, and praise from others for racial sensitivity. Fos agitprop fantasia, translated for ACT by San Francisco Mime Troupe playwright Joan Holden, concerns a holy father who suddenly embraces the idea of birth control and heroin legalization. The pontiffs change of heart is triggered by a mind-bending encounter with an unorthodox woman healer, who ministers to the poor by performing illegal abortions and supplying addicts with drugs. After Perloffs announcement, a guest editorial by Wade Hughan in the San Francisco Chronicle called ACT to task for a very selective cultural sensitivity along lines currently politically correct. Other Catholics also protested, and in October, San Francisco Archbishop John R. Quinn joined the chorus. From the pulpit of St. Marys Cathedral he expressed dismay over a wave of cultural expressions he labeled defamatory attacks on Catholicism. He cited the irreverent lampoon of Christianity in Gore Vidals new novel, Live From Golgotha, Irish pop star Sinead OConnors defiant rip-up of a Pope John Paul II photo on TVs Saturday Night Live, and the Fo play, which he said portrayed the pope as something of a lunatic. Without that, Fos satirical thrusts seem diffused and somewhat arbitrary, and the final scene of conspiracy and assassination is not fully motivated. But even if the bank scandal had been left in The Pope and the Witch, this Fo play would probably not have traveled well to the U.S. (It apparently found a warmer reception in England.) Its not a question of whether the script offends anyone; of course it does, just as The Merchant of Venice will always bother some Jewish viewers, Lend Me a Tenor may continue to raise hackles, and some Catholics still arent wild about Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You. But Fos comedy is no ad hominum attack on Catholicism, nor a personalized mugging of a spiritual leader. It criticizes the Vatican as a corporation, and challenges some social directives that have been hotly debated within the Church itself. Waving a red flag   There must be a reason why The Pope and the Witch could be performed by Fo and his charismatic wife-partner Franca Rame in Italy, on state-subsidized television, without a murmur of protest from the Vatican or the overwhelmingly Roman Catholic citizenry. Id venture it has to do with an acceptance of Fo as a theatrical clown sanctioned, expected, encouraged to lampoon and demystify his countrys most omnipotent institutions. That is the role Fo has carved for himself over a long, prolific, often controversial career, and it is one he continues to play to the hilt. But it is not the position ACT, well known in the past for its rendition of classics and stylish comedies of manners, has occupied in San Francisco. If ACT decides to add blunt, topical social criticism to its mix, subscribers may need some help to make the shiftand the theatre should be prepared to wave goodbye to the ones who wont. That doesnt mean that Perloff and the new ACT will have to avoid offending anyone at all costs. But the Vatican is the Vatican is the Vatican. And this Pope (though Fo does not call him John Paul II and in Hoyles reading, he did not sport a Polish accent) is hard not to confuse with The Pope. In ethnically hypersensitized San Francisco, where the new mayor is an Irish-American ex-police chief and the president of the Board of Supervisors hails from a large, entrenched Italian-American political community, the Pope and the Witch is nothing if not a red flag. Nevertheless, ACT can look on the bright side: Only four subscribers took up the offer to exchange their tickets for another show; fund-raising has (so far) been unaffected by the conflict; and for the first time in years ACTs repertoire was a hot topic of discussion at Bay Area breakfast tables.

Wright builds up rather extensive documentation to prove that Biggers actions, behavior, values, attitudes, and fate have already been determined by his status and place in American life (Margolies Art 1). Bigger is alienated from any kind of relationship. [Wright] claimed he valued the state of abandonment, aloneness. In this he was, finally, a true product of Western culture (Discovering 5). Western culture places Bigger, as well as other African Americans, in a position where they are expected to be submissive to whites. Bigger sees violence as the only alternative to dumb submission to a dehumanizing lot (Margolies Study 65-66). In Native Son, Bigger claims that the murder of Mary Dalton, his employer's daughter, is not intentional. But really I never wanted to hurt nobody. Thats the truth...I hurt folks cause I felt I had to; thats all. They were crowding me too close; they wouldnt let me...Mr. Max, I didnt mean to do what I did. I was trying to do something else [sic] (Smith 393). In Native Son, fear and hate are determining factors in Biggers life. The root of all of Biggers fears is realization of what he, as a black man, has to endure and will become (Margolies Art 2). Bigger attacks his friends because he thinks that they can see his fear. By attacking them, he gives himself a false sense of courage (Margolies Study 76). He accidentally kills Mary Dalton because he is afraid that her mother will accuse him of sexually assaulting Mary. This becomes a simplified explanation of ascetics that is easily discernable by the Chinese. The gods of the different religions presented in the novel differ in hierarchies and roles. These gods are also subject to much superior universal forces. The folk heaven which the novel mainly draws from Taoist mythology is a model of the government of Chinese emperors (Flanagan, 2011). This scenario is underscored by the rewards Xuanzang disciples receive after delivering the sutras. Conveniently, private corporations realize the potential buying power of students and have decided that elementary schools are the best channel to reach them. It has become routine for corporations to market there products in schools, and in exchange these schools receive various financial benefits. This new partnership has become the focus of much controversy as 80% of Americans feel that corporations should have no place in schools (). The two most cited concerns are the health of children and the growing commercialization of schools. This paper looks at this issue in detail by answering the following two questions. Is it ethical for corporations to market products in schools? What is the most socially responsible course of action for corporations to take? This paper will use a utilitarian and distributive justice framework to prove that marketing in schools is unethical and propose that the most ethical arrangement is to make schools commercial-free zones. This paper will also discuss the issue of corporate social responsibility through shareholder and stakeholder lenses to prove that there is a strong business case for corporations to? Children in schools are marketed to in a variety of ways. Schools can participate in incentive programs where a school receives funds to take part in a specific activity such as collecting box tops (). Some corporations offer free educational materials to schools that promote their corporate message. Pepsi encourages a thirst for knowledge on a popular textbook cover(). Each year over half of the students in schools in the United States receive free textbook covers(). McDonalds, Burger King and Dominos sponsor reading projects in schools with free meals(). Other schools receive free electronic equipment like computers and satellites for participating in programs like channel one. This is an arrangement where school receive free electronic equipment for having their students watch a 10 minute broadcast of which 2 minutes are corporate sponsored commercials (). All of these marketing techniques pose there own unique ethical dilemmas, however the most controversial type of marketing in schools today is the use of exclusive agreements. This is when corporations give schools a percentage of their profits in exchange for the right to be the sole provider of a product or a service(). The most prominent example of this is the soft drink company, Coca-Cola and their exclusive distribution rights with schools. As a result, Coca-Cola advertisements have become the most visible types of advertisements in schools today (). A US National School Health Policies study found that students could purchase soft drinks in 60% of elementary schools and 83% of middle schools (). Of these schools over 85% were under an exclusive contract with the Coca-Cola company (). For the aforementioned reasons the remainder of this paper will use the soft drink giant Coca Cola as a symbol to make it easier to understand the larger debate of marketing in elementary schools. A deontological framework can not determine whether this issue is ethical or unethical. In 1990 under $100 million was spent on advertising targeted at kids, just a decade later that number was up more than twenty times to over $2 billion (). This large increase in spending indicates that there is a strong motivation for corporations to market to youth. One way to determine if marketing in schools is ethical is to deconstruct these motivations through a deontological framework. The motivation for companies to market in schools could be a philanthropic opportunity to contribute to education. However, I do not believe this because companies like Coca-Cola make schools sign exclusive agreements, which means that they block competition and are profitable. I believe the main motive for companies to market to youth is to make money. Marketing to students in schools is an effective strategy as it reaps both short and long term rewards. Children in elementary schools have a lot of spending power. Kids ages 4-12 spend $40 billion each year (). Furthermore, these same kids influence $600 billion of household spending (). It is wise for companies to try to earn a share of this large market. Surprisingly, the sales of sodas in schools account for a miniscule slice of soda sales worldwide, less than 1 percent of sodas 66billion dollar industry (). Clearly profit in the short run is not the main motivating factor for companies like Coca-Cola. Marketing in public elementary school promises long run benefits. Soft drink companies can create brand loyalty with their consumers at an early age. In other words, they foster and retain a captive audience for its products. If you consider the cutthroat competition among soft drink makers for customers, this brand loyalty becomes a vital business pursuit. A deontological framework can better help us deconstruct the ehics of marketing to youth purely for financial reasons. Specifically, this paper will employ some of W. D. Ross duties. It can be argued that marketing in schools violates the duty of non-malefiicence (to do no harm). Some children will substitute a nutritious meal for a sugar laden soda. That is harmful to their health. Marketing in schools also violates the duty of gratitude. It does not thank customers for their business by protecting their health. Instead, companies like Coca-Cola continue to aggressively market their unhealthy product to vulnerable youth. On the other hand, if one considers a corporation a person, then a corporation fulfils Rosss duty of self-improvement by marketing in schools. It improves its own condition by increasing its profits in the short and the long run. Additionally, if a company honestly abides by the contract it signs with a school then it is upholding Rosss duty of fidelity. The framework of deontology is inadequate to determine the ethics of marketing in schools because it presents us with conflicting duties and no hierarchy to put them into. There is an incompatible difference between the various duties. However, this situation did not become controversial simply because some believe that a corporation might have bad ethics, instead people are worried about the consequences of marketing in schools. A utilitarian framework shows us that marketing in schools is unethical. Marketing in elementary school is controversial because it offers many direct benefits to schools, but negatively impact students. Through a utilitarian framework this paper will deconstruct the pros and cons of the scenario to determine whether marketing in schools is ethical. This paper will conduct a cost-benefit analysis to determine what results in the greatest good for the greatest number of people. The main players that benefit in this scenario are schools, shareholders of the Coca-Cola company, and employees. All of these players benefit in financial terms. Vending machines are a valuable source of revenue for schools. They support programs that might otherwise go unfunded. Elementary schools have reason to be concerned about their finances, the state of California cut the elementary school budget by $10 billion dollars in 2003 (). If a school district signs an exclusive contract with a soft-drink company it can generate an additional $3 million per year (). School districts receive all of this money for virtually no additional work on there part. This is why the cliche that: one day our schools will have all the money they need, and the Air Force will have to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber could become true (). Company shareholders benefit in the long run if we assume that marketing in schools create brand loyalty among consumers. Company employees also benefit from the sales of sodas in schools, simply because their company is continuing to be competitive in the marketplace and provide work for them. However, the positive impact of selling sodas in schools impacts company employees considerably less than other players in this scenario, because these employees will not be receiving a pay raise as a result of this practice. While there are some positive effects of marketing in schools, I feel that the cons greatly outweigh the benefits. Students bear the burden of the negative effects of marketing in schools. Marketing to youth perpetrates problems of childhood obesity, materialism, eating disorders, violence, and family stress (). This is especially problematic because children are more cognitively immature and prone to believe that products marketed in school carry their schools endorsement. For instance, if a school sells soda it signifies that it is acceptable to consume drinks that are high in sugar and have poor nutritional quality. A childs health is not an acceptable trade-off for increased revenues. Childhood obesity is an epidemic in America. One-quarter of children in the United States are overweight which means they are at risk for lifelong health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and cavities (). Competitors also suffer in this scenario because ? exclusive agreements create a monopoly on a school and therefore promote unfair competition and can charge whatever price they want. The difficulty of examining ethics from a utilitarian perspective is that is impossible to predict the future. It is not clear how much the financial revenue schools gain from executive agreements helps them to fulfill their purpose of teaching. It is also not clear how high the correlation is between marketing in schools and negative outcomes like obesity. What is known is that most of the negative consequences (and there are a lot of them) fall on the shoulders of the students. Having the burden of this issue fall on the shoulders of millions of students nationwide is bad for society as a whole. Children need to be educated in a healthy atmosphere so that they can become productive members of society one day. It is detrimental to the future if children are not provided with the best learning environment possible. The best learning environment possible is one that is free from commercial influences. The Distributive Justice framework shows that monopolies are unethical. According to John Rawls we should determine ethical dilemmas like whether marketing in schools is ethical by making the decision from behind a veil of ignorance. The distributive justice framework tries to ensure that the interests of the worst off in society are considered. According to this theory, students well-being should be put before business interests because students are the most vulnerable group in this scenario. However, there is an inherent conflict of interest within this framework. Corporations believe that marketing in schools is ethical because they are exercising their 1st amendment right to free speech. Everybody has this right, thus they are utilizing the equal liberty principle: equal rights to liberties as long as all may be provided such liberties. The problem is that not even all corporations are being provided the liberty of free speech. As previously mentioned Coca Cola has an exclusive agreement with 85% of elementary schools in America, this is just a nice way to say that Coca Cola has a monopoly on the elementary school market (). Companies that engage in exclusive distributive contracts are trying to block competitors. They can not justify this action on the ground that they need to do this to spur innovation, they want a monopoly so they can control the school market. Thus the difference principle comes into play because the inequality that these companies are creating in the market place needs to be addressed. The most ethical thing to do is to make schools commercial free zones. Marketing in schools is unethical. The most ethical thing to do is to make elementary schools commercial-free zones. Students should be able to pursue learning free of commercial influences and pressures. Eighty percent of adults in the United States agree that schools should be commercial-free zones as well (). While this may be the most ethical course of action, it seems highly unlikely as marketing in schools has become entrenched. Schools continually need more money and the government is unable to provide it. If marketing in schools must continue at the very least it should be regulated. It does not seem probable that the industry will regulate itself, so it should be subject to more government oversight. Right now there is very little the government has done to restrict marketing in schools. Laws forbidding it are perceived to be a breach of the 1st amendment. A study found that only nineteen states currently have statues or regulations that address school-related commercial activities (). This number includes states that have statues that encourage commercial activities. The government should establish an independent commission to regulate marketing in public schools. This agency should make regulations that encourage schools to provide a healthy learning environment for students. The agency could regulate the sale of foods high in fat, sodium, and sugars. For example, it could decide that vending machines can not be stocked with sodas; however juices (100%) and water could still be sold. There would be greater social acceptance of this issue if it were implemented more appropriately. The business case for CSR prevails. This paper has established that the most ethical thing for corporations to do is to stop marketing to students in schools, or at the very least to regulate what they market to children. If a company were to stop marketing to children for the aforementioned ethical considerations it would be following a normative line of reasoning. The company would be interested in doing the right thing for society with little regard for how the proposition would effect its own bottom line. While I would applaud its efforts on a moral basis, this would be a very poor reason to engage in Corporate Social Responsibility. There needs to be a business incentive for corporations to engage in Corporate Social Responsibility. A company has to be successful financially if it is going to survive in the long run. However, there is always a business case for corporate social responsibility with respect to companies that sell consumer products. In the long run the closer a company aligns with the values of society the more successful it will be. Good ethics and good business are mutually reinforcing. In this case 80% of society wants commercial-free schools or at least commercialism that is regulated. It is socially responsible for a company to accommodate the wishes of society because it is in their long run interest to build a good reputation. A company like Coca-cola may be more successful at recruiting, retaining, and engaging with its employees and customers if it demonstrates that it is socially responsible. Critics might argue that this is just mere window dressing. However, a good reputation leads to higher sales in the long run. Both shareholder and stakeholder frameworks would support the business case for corporate social responsibility in this scenario. Milton Freidman is an advocate of the shareholder theory which maintains that a companies corporate social responsibility is to maximize profits without breaking the law or violating basic rules of society. Coca-Cola is not breaking any laws by marketing in schools, it is merely exercising its first amendment right to free speech. It is also not violating any social norms, children get to choose whether they want to buy unhealthy products. On one hand it may seem that Freidman would say that corporations should continue to market in schools because they are making a profit and therefore helping society. However Freidman would agree that companies need to balance there short term gains against their long-term interest. In this case, Freidman would advocate for the restriction of marketing in schools because it is in the long run self-interest of the company because companies like Coca-Cola needs to reassure their customers that they care about them. . An alternative approach to corporate social responsibility is the stakeholder theory. This theory maintains that companies should balance the interests of all stakeholders involved. In this scenario the stakeholders would be the students (customers), parents, teachers, corporations, suppliers, employees, shareholders, and society. Students are harmed by marketing in schools because marketing is correlated with problems like obesity and materialism. On the other hand these same students benefit because their schools are receiving additional funding for programs. Parents suffer because they have less control over what their children are exposed to, and it could undermine their values. Shareholders may benefit in the short run from marketing in schools, but in the long run the values of the company must be aligned with society if it is going to succeed. Therefore, the stakeholder theory would advocate a business case for Corporate Social Responsibility as well: to limit marketing in schools. Marketing in schools is a complex issue with many players. In this case, students are the most important players because schools are public institutions and schools are supposed to make students a top priority. Marketing in schools can not stop on its own, it needs to be either strictly prohibited or at the very least limited by the government.

A Figurative Ad Advertisements display many examples of ethos, pathos, and logos. Many ads use celebrities and direct emotional appeals toward their audience. The ad I will be talking about is a figure skater endorsing a watch and demonstrating ethos and pathos. Overall, the advertisement is useful and effective when displaying ethos and pathos. Envision a one page advertisement that has enough information to understand what product is being sold. The first thing to draw attention to the eyes is the division of color. The top third of the ad has a black background and the bottom is a white/gray color. In the black part of the ad are a woman’s head and hands. She is looking in to your line of vision and it is clear she is holding her hands up in front of her body but, they appear to be behind because her head is turned toward whoever is looking at the ad. Then, I was drawn to look at the small print underneath her face and the words ‘Sasha Cohen, champion figure skater’ are found. It turns out that the woman in the ad is Sasha Cohen, a famous figure skater. The next part of the advertisement is underneath the black portion containing Sasha Cohen and it shows a watch and lettering. On the page, this watch is so big; it is bigger than the skater’s head. The watch is gold and silver colored with some diamonds on the rim. Clearly this watch is expensive and fashionable. After viewing Sasha Cohen and the watch, the eyes are drawn to read about the product. Beside the watch in the same very small black print used below Sasha Cohen, it says ‘ECO-DRIVE Riva.’ To get a full understanding of the product you have to look at a column of words found on the right side of the ad. In this order, are printed the words ‘UNSTOPPABLE.’ Below that in black and less bold words is ‘SASHA COHEN IS. So is her citizen Eco-Drive.’ ‘Fueled by light, it never needs a battery.’ ‘IT’S UNSTOPPABLE. Just like the people who wear it.’ All these groups of sentences are put together on the ad a nd appear vertically as you read. Then below, you see a symbol of the Citizen Eco-Drive watch and the name below and below that contact information. Now that you have the main visual of the ad, I will explain why this ad demonstrates both ethos and pathos.

Chief Justice Earl Warren Essay

President Dwight Eisenhower appointed Earl Warren as the fourteenth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1953. Warren had been the governor of California twice and was also on the republican ticket for Vice President under Thomas Dewey. It was assumed that Warren would pickup where his successor Fred Vinson left off as a conservative member of the Supreme Court, but instead Warren positioned himself as a liberal. When Warren took over as Chief Justice, justices who aligned with judicial activism and those who were in favor of judicial restraint divided the Supreme Court. One of Warren’s goals was to renew the Supreme Courts role in defending individual rights. Warren presided over several civil rights landmark cases including Brown vs. Board of Education I and II, which would spark the great civil rights movement. Warren also presided over cases such as McGowan vs. Maryland and also Tropp vs. Dulles. In Brown vs. the Board of Education, Warren was greatly criticized for not appealing to the precedent (Plessy vs. Ferguson), and rather relying on common sense and fairness. In Chief Justices Warren’s dissenting opinion of Brown vs. Board of Education I, he stated † Today, education is perhaps the most important function of state and local governments . †¦ To separate them from others of similar age and qualifications solely because of their race generates a feeling of inferiority as to their status in the community.. .that may affect their hearts and minds in a way unlikely to ever be undone.† His final statement emphasized that separate but equal facilities are inherently unequal, and also that such a doctrine deprived the plaintiffs of the equal protection of the laws guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment. The unanimous decision uncoiled previous twists of the Constitution that focused solely on the belief that â€Å"separate but equal facilities did not imply any type of racial inferiority. In 1966 Warren and his court had another major decision to deal with, â€Å"Miranda v. State of Arizona.† The case dealt with criminal suspects and their rights. The court’s decision was that criminal suspects had to be informed of their  rights before questioning. Warren and the Supreme Court also ruled decisions dealing with legislative apportionment, the basic rights of citizenship, and limitation of the use of libel laws. Again, Warren received both criticism and praise as a result of his judicial performances. After such landmark cases, Warren’s leadership in these cases became a political institution known as † The Warren Court†, with a heavy emphasis on equality and civil rights. The Warren Court used judicial activism and judicial review to interpret the authority and infallibility of the Supreme Court to promote the importance of individual rights. If those individual rights were seen as infringed, the case was likely to be overturned. Warren presided over Brown v. Louisiana 1966, a case where a black student was arrested for protesting a segregated library. Again the Warren Court looked to the 14th Amendments guaranteeing the freedom of speech and assembly, ruling that these rights are not confined to verbal expression. In another case the Warren Court ruled on Yates v. United States 1956. In this case the court overturned the convictions of Communist leaders under the Smith Act. History of the Pneumatic Tubes Pneumatic devices are various tools and instruments that generate and utilize compressed air. Pneumatics are everywhere in important inventions, however, they are relatively unknown to the general public. History of the First Pneumatic Tools The hand bellows used by early smelters and blacksmiths for working iron and metals was a simple type of air compressor and the first pneumatic tool. Pneumatic Air Pumps and Compressors During the 17th century, German physicist and engineer Otto von Guericke experimented with and improved air compressors. In 1650, Guericke invented the first air pump. It could produce a partial vacuum and Guericke used it to study the phenomenon of vacuum and the role of air in combustion and respiration. In 1829, the first stage or compound air compressor was patented. A compound air compressor compresses air in successive cylinders. By 1872, compressor efficiency was improved by having the cylinders cooled by water jets, which led to the invention of water-jacketed cylinders. Pneumatic Tubes The best-known pneumatic device is, of course, the pneumatic tube. A pneumatic tube is a method of transporting objects using compressed air. In the past, pneumatic tube s  were often used in large office buildings to transport messages and objects from office to office. The first documented genuine pneumatic tube in the United States is officially listed in a 1940 patent issued to Samuel Clegg and Jacob Selvan. This was a vehicle with wheels, on a track, positioned within a tube. Alfred Beach built a pneumatic train subway in New York City (a giant pneumatic tube) based on his 1865 patent. The subway ran briefly in 1870 for one block west of City Hall. It was Americas first subway. The cash carrier invention sent money in little tubes traveling by air compression from location to location in a department store so that change could be made. The first mechanical carriers used for store service was patented (#165,473) by D. Brown on July 13, 1875. However, it was not until 1882 when an inventor called Martin patented improvements in the system that the invention became widespread. Martins patents were numbered 255,525 issued March 28, 1882, 276,441 issued April 24, 1883, and 284,456 issued on September 4, 1883. The Chicago postal pneumatic tube service began between the post office and the Winslow railroad station on August 24, 1904. The service used miles of tube rented from the Chicago Pneumatic Tube Company. Pneumatic Hammer and Drill Samuel Ingersoll invented the pneumatic drill in 1871. Charles Brady King of Detroit invented the pneumatic hammer (a hammer which is driven by compressed air) in 1890, and patented on January 28, 1894. Charles King exhibited two of his inventions at the 1893 Worlds Columbia Exposition; a pneumatic hammer for riveting and caulking and a steel brake beam for railroad road cars. Modern Pneumatic Devices During the 20th century, compressed air and of compressed-air devices increased. Jet engines use centrifugal and axial-flow compressors. Only reinforcement bars carry tensile stress where compressive stress is carried by both reinforcement bars and concrete depending on the situation carry load. Normally steel bar is used as reinforcement because it has enough strength and steel bars are available at required strength with fair cost. In early days wooden bar also was used for this purpose. Concrete is weak in tension and strong in compression. Reinforcement is provided to enhance the moment carrying capacity of structure. Tor steel bars are used as reinforcement material at our site. T-32, T-25, T-20, T-16 and T-10 bars which are imported from Singapoor, Malasiya and local product also and length of 6m and 12m, are used in our site. The reinforcement is laid according to the structural drawings. After that the following checks are done. Spacing Diameter type of bars No of stirrups No of links Lap length Starter bars if needed Cover blocks Covering Regular binding of bars together Placement of tension compression bars If there are any construction joints, they should be chipped and cleaned to bond properly. INDICATION OF REINFORCEMENT IN DRAWING Engineering drawings is a language of communication of details. Therefore there is a standard to indicate reinforcement in drawing such as 6T16-101-8 B or T This means that ‘6’- No of bars ‘T’ Indicate tor steel ‘16’- Indicate the diameter of the bar in mm ‘101’- Indicate the bar mark ‘8’- Indicate the distance between two bars in inches ‘T’- Indicate the position of the bar (top bar) ‘B’ Indicate the position of the bar (bottom bar) BAR BENDING WORK Bar bending is carried by machinery method and manual. For minor works it was done manually with the help of cutting lever. Skilled bar benders are involved in this process. The bar bender do his job according to bar schedule which is given to him. It includes Size type of bar Number of bar Dimensions Bending length Crank length position Shape of bar Bar mark Name type of structural member Place Grids between those grids it is used For transferring the stress at the end of bars have to be welded or lapped at the end. The lap should not be less than the anchorage length. The minimum length of lap in tension and compression is 45 times of diameter of the bar. The types and numbers of bars are planed earlier and cut. Sufficient numbers of stirrups are also made by bar benders. Before placing the steel bars, they are cleaned well. It should not be allowed to move when concreting. Cover blocks are used to place reinforcement bars with cover. Cover blocks are made up of 1:3 cement sand mortars. Cover blocks are not removed after concreting and it is important element. Its’ strength should not be less than to strength of concrete. Sizes of cover blocks vary according to the structural members. The cover block thickness of, slab is 25mm, beam, column, lift wall retaining wall are 30mm and shoring side water retaining structures are 40mm. When beams are bound it is kept out of the pit of beam for the easy of work. First top bars of beam and stirrups are bound. Then other bars are inserted and bound. While reinforcement of beam is brought down after finishing the work, very nicely it is get down without affecting the formwork. Usually for all structural members lap is not allowed at a same level for all bars. And alternative bars having laps at a same level. But columns have laps at a same level because of difficulties of binding of long bars and reinforcement is crowded at the junction of beam and column. Lap is avoided at critical position of tension and compression. SCHEDULE OF BARS Schedule of bars gives the number of bars required in each type for a reinforcement network. By having bar schedule following advantages can be achieved. Time saving in the reinforcement work Amount of steel required can be exactly calculated. So purchase in excess or high transport cost can be avoided. Wasting of cut off pieces can be reduced give more efficiency as reinforcements are expensive. Laps occurring in tension portion can be avoided. Bar benders can easily understand. Easy to handle at site. While we make a bar schedule we should know about the tension and compression how to acting on the member. And lap should not be allowed to be in the tension portion and critical compression portion also. When we are doing schedule for slab if part of slab is finished for the balance work we take site measurement for required length of reinforcement. The typical lap position for beam is shown below: SLAB Slab is a kind of plate, which can carry loads. Basically slabs are divided in to two types as one-way spanning slab and two-way spanning slab. Depending on the type of slab the amount of reinforcement, which placed to resist the moments, is different. Most probably slabs are reinforced only for tension and compression is supported by concrete. Usually for middle of slab reinforcement is placed at bottom and edge (near the beam or supports) of slab reinforcement is placed at top. But basement floor slab reinforcement is placed in opposition way. Therefore middle of slab reinforcement is at top and edge (around the beam) of slab reinforcement is at bottom. Between the top bar and bottom bar of the slab should be maintained while concreting it may be disturbed due to load which is the load of workers, instrument and concrete flow pipe. Overall reinforcement cover is checked by leveling instrument. To keep the space between those two bars space bar is used. BEAM Beam is the load-transferring member building, which transfer load from slab to column. In the beams tension is supported by reinforcement and compression is supported by concrete and reinforcement. In most occasions, middle of beam undergoes sagging moment and beam nearby support undergoes hogging moment. For supporting the higher tension, additional tension bars are inserted at bottom of middle and top of edge therefore nearby support. But basement floor reinforcement is in the opposition way. For basement floor beams additional tension bars are inserted at top of middle and bottom of nearby pile caps. While bars are bound to the beam space between two bars should not be less than 1.5 times bar diameter. This minimum space is required for, to form an enough bonding between reinforcement concrete and to minimize the damage while impact load is applied on the beam reinforcement take dynamic movement. COLUMN Column is the main member to transfer the load to foundation. Column is mainly designed for carrying the compression. But it is designed to support the moment also while considering the eccentricity and side force therefore wind load. In column compression is carried by concrete and reinforcement. Column reinforcement is mainly designed for support the compression and small amount of tension that is caused by moment. For large size bars (T 32, T25, etc.) lap is held at same level. Due to the handling problem and if the lap is in the junction of column and beam concreting is very difficult some time huney homb may occur. Column typical lap is shown in the figure 7.4. Probably most of columns reinforcements are symmetrical about two axes. First when bars are bound verticality of bar is maintained. SECTIONAL VIEW Stair case   Stair case is same as slab reinforcement. Therefore tension reinforce is provided at bottom and at the edges tension reinforcement is provided at top. Here in addition to slab some tension reinforcement is provided junctions. STIRRUP Stirrup is main element in supporting the shear force. If we consider column, stirrups are used for to hole the vertical bar together. Due to load column mar bulk in this situation cracks may appear in vertical direction. Without happening bulk stirrups bound the column. In the beam, there is more probability to happen the shear failer because it transfer load horizontally. Beam is not a continuous element that is the compound of cement, sand, aggregate and reinforcement. These elements are bound by bond, which may fail in transferring the shear stress. Of cause we use stirrups to carry out the shear stress for beams and columns. In our site stirrups are made by bar bending machine. Stirrup shape is shown in the figure 7.6 Industrial Training Report Industrial Training Report INTRODUCTION In this duration 20/4/2009 until 2/10/2009, I had been assigned to a company name SILVERLAKE SYSTEM SDN BHD, which is located at LEVEL 2A KPMG TOWER FIRST AVENUE, BANDAR UTAMA 47800 PETALING, SELANGOR to complete my internship. On the 1st day, I have been brief by their staffs at there about the rules of company and how their organization works. After that, we had assigned to follow different supervisors and department. I had been assigned to clients side which is at KWSP building under team LEGAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (LMS). On the 2nd day, I have to go there to continue my internship until 2/10/2009. Basically, my team at KWSP building is handling about a website name legal/panel that can let users/employees to perform their tasks. Those tasks are like approve, assign, and reject, accept case; work with case status, criminal, civil, court action; perform some calculation fees, date; some reports for review and etc. My team have 4 senior staffs and me 1 trainee. They had briefly told me how they perform their tasks and teach me a lot of knowledge about working. Software Exposure (software used, projects or assignments completed) During this industry training, I had used some software to do my tasks and projects. Example of software, iseries Navigator, IBM RPGLE software, Legal System, XML generator, SCITE version 1.63, Microsoft word, Microsoft excel, Microsoft power point and hotmail (email). They had taught me how to use some software that I dont know, so that I can do my tasks. Following, I will briefly describe how I use the software to do my tasks. iSeries Navigator I briefly describe iSeries Navigator is a powerful graphical interface to easily work with the iSeries server. To use iSeries Navigator, we need to have server connections that connect to the environments of our work. So we need a login ID and password to login to the environments, after we login, there will be a list of functions that we can use for perform our tasks. Example of functions like, security, network, databases, backup and etc, all those functions still have sub functions like run SQL script and etc. In here, I had been assigned some tasks on write SQL statements by using SQL Performance Monitor which is sub function of Databases tasks. This function can allows us to keep track of the resources that SQL statements use. Basically, I using this software to run some SQL statements, retrieve some useful data records to do reference, update, insert or delete some data records in the database. Example like update users details, insert new users details, for checking purpose an d etc. IBM RPGLE software This is complex software that about back end system and also related to database. I didnt learn this software before so they have to teach me more about this software and some useful commands to do my tasks. Example of the useful or important commands like dspff= display file fields, call function, and etc. This software is related to database, back end system and is very important, so they just teach me some simple and basic commands to retrieve some data, information for me to refer. I usually use this software to retrieve some useful information from database. For example, after I enter some command like dspff lg8068i (files name), then the system will show out the fields name, length, position and text of the file we choose. This mean if we change the interface of the modules, example like want to add more fields or update something, then we have to use tis system to add the fields that we need. Example like we wan modify the text fields length, we also need to modify using this system, change the length of the text that we want. After do any changes, then we have to generate the XML file again and replace it to the server. When generate XML file, we also have to refer the information from here. Legal System Actually it is system software of a web page, this system include screen display like views, pages, menus and etc; Scripts like javascripts, VBscripts; system customisation, system maintenance, user password validate and etc. All of these are use to build the EPF web page that we using now. This system software can let us create webpage, example like create buttons, textbox, dropdownlist, and write coding like javascripts,VBscripts, SQL query and etc. I had been assigned to write some javascript code for example some functions, event those things during my industri training. For example, I had to use this software to write some code to create a function for a dropdownlist to perform certain events. After select the value from dropdownlist, the function will perform some action according to the value that we select, for example, enabled a text field for us to modify and update the information or display some information that we need. Im also writing the coding for others functions, ex ample like if-else statement, display, get value and etc. Besides that, this system software also can let us maintain users detail for example users password, report maintenance. There is a part name maintenance view page for us to create, write or modify our coding and also test our coding or find error. After all had done, then save it in this system, then we can go the related page to test the function that we did just now. XML Generator XML Generator is software that can let us generate XML file, XML was designed to transport and store data, with focus on what data is. XML document is a string of characters. This XML Generator is done by that staffs who works at here. The XML file is save as notepad format, so we can edit it by using notepad. When we need to generate a XML file for a module, we need to login to RPGLE system to retrieve the data attribute from related table, for example like data field, length, data type and etc, and then copy the whole table to notepad and save it. After that, copy the notepad file to source folder of XML generator. After that, we can key in the request name, transaction code, action code, input field file, un-repeated field file, repeated field file and etc. After complete build, we need to replace this XML file for the old XML file in the server. There will be an interface of XML generator software at appendix part. We need to generate again the XML file if we had change data type ; field or data attribute in the database, for example, add more data field, or like changed the field length of some data. After finish doing this, then had to doing testing on the field that we had modify or added. For example, we had change the data field length of description field, and then we need to test whether the field length can store the data that we had already set. XML basically is use for web services, parse data, and store data. SciTE version 1.63 SciTE is software that we using here for write coding. SciTE have the feature of automatic syntax styling and it can hold multiple files in memory at one time but only one file will be visible. There are two panes in SciTE, the editing pane and the output pane. The output pane is located either to the right of the editing pane or below it. SciTE can perform commands to compile or run source files with the output from these commands directed into the output pane. SciTE currently is able to syntax style these languages: C++, C#, javascript, HTML and etc. We using this software to write those coding for example like javascript, SQL scripts, and others coding. We are using this software because it support many programming language and also have automatic syntax styling. Besides that, this software also can let us easily write our coding for example like it can let us easily control the alignment of coding and have coding line calculation; find and search function. All these functions can let us write coding with more efficient and effective. Microsoft word It is a useful software and is using for documentation tasks. I using Microsoft word to do documentation about print screen of all the modules or sub modules of the system, then briefly explain what is the condition and name of each of the modules. This documentation is done for users to let them understand the condition of those modules and how to perform their task by using those modules in the system. Besides that, merge field also done by Microsoft word, after insert merge field, we can show those information from database. Press alt+f9 will show the coding that hidden and we can modify and update it. Microsoft Excel I use Microsoft excel to write SQL Statements. They give me some task like write SQL scripts, they will give me all the information that I need to update and I will write my SQL scripts like update statement in excel. Actually write in excel is for backup purpose. Microsoft Power Point I am using this software to do some power point slide for user. In this power point slide, I have included some diagram example like activity diagram, and some flow diagram. I also using power point to show the flow of those activities, follow step by step and sequence so that the user can understand how the flow of activities go. Hotmail (E-Mail) My team was doing a project on sending inform email to users so they use my e-mail for testing purpose. I using my email to test the system is it will send a correct email to the user after doing some action; accept any case, any status changes or etc in the system. I have to check is it the information of the email that send to my mail is accurate when refer to the task that I had did in the module of the system. For example, I have to check the information like employees no, name, case files no, date and etc is it same with the case that I perform those tasks. After I perform some tasks, it will send an e-mail to my hotmail to inform me those latest update. Hardware Exposure (software used, projects or assignments completed) During this industry training, I have been provided a desktop with specification pentium[r] 4 cpu, 3.06GHz, 1 GB ram and 80GB hard disk. Besides that, there is a share printer that can let us use for print documents. Environment Exposure (e.g. working relationship with colleagues, clients, management, etc) During this whole industri training, I was assigned to KWSP building to continue my training. The location of KWSP building is around Masjid Jamek, I always go work by taking LRT from Wangsa Maju, so it is very convenient. The environment of the KWSP is very good and also provides us a lot of good facilities. Besides that, the working environment is also very clean and comfortable. There are 4 trainees including me that had been assigned to KWSP building to continue our training. All of us had been assigned to different departments and do our tasks according to our team. For example, main task for BDS team is about database and our LEGAL team is about front-end like SQL, retrieve data show to user. My team need to communicate with users (workers) from KWSP because we need to get feedback from them about our system that performs tasks for them. So our team got a good relationship with those users from KWSP to make sure that the systems can perform tasks successfully without errors. Co lleagues in my team are very good and friendly. After they giving me some tasks to do, they will explain to me how to do and also teach me if I dont know how to do. When I got some problems or errors, they will teach me how to find those errors and teach me how to solve those problems. They always teach me a lot of useful knowledge about working and guide me when I had some problems. I really had learnt a lot of knowledge and gain a lot of working experience from them. Conclusion Finally I had finished my industry training in this semester and now is already started a new semester to continue study. During my training semester, I really had learnt a lot of knowledge from my colleagues and some working experience from them. I am glad to become their trainee because they really teach me a lot and when I got facing some problems, they willing to teach me how to solve it or help me to solve those errors. This industry training really provides a lot of benefits for me. During this training, I had a chance to learning from them while working, besides that, I also know more about the working environment at outside. Other than gain knowledge about the programming language from my working place, I also learn more about teamwork from them. In working environment, work as a team is important for complete a project, so teamwork is important for working. Working is not same as study, in working environment; we need to have a good communication skill because when working, communications between employees or clients are very important. I really learnt a lot of extra knowledge from my colleagues during my industry training, I really appreciate it and thanks for them in teaching me and guide me along this whole training. Week 1 (From 1-6-09 to 5-6-09 ) Last week I had learned and write some SQL statements for the program to retrieve data from the database. So this week, I continue doing my work on SQL statements. In this task, I am using a program name SQL analysis to check whether my SQL statements is correct and can retrieve data from database. By using this program, we can update and check the data in the database that we want. So in this week, they give me a task to update those selected data in the database by using this program. Besides that, I also have to retrieve those selected data from database and check whether those data are correct. Week 2 (From 8-6-09 to 12-6-09 ) At last week, they already teach me how to generate XML files. We need to generate again the XML file if we had change data type, field or data attribute in the database, for example, add more data field, or like changed the field length of some data. They are using the RPGLE system to add data field or change those datas field length for a table. So after they had done any changed to the table, we had to generate again the related XML file by using the XML generator. After generate again the new XML file will be replace the old XML file and store it in the server so that the interface of the web page will be changed too. After finish doing this, then had to doing testing on the field that we had modify or added. For example, we had change the data field length of description field, and then we need to test whether the field length can store the data that we had already set. Week 3 (From 15-6-09 to 19-6-09 ) In this week, they teach me how to find out what are those errors and see the error occur in which data field. In the server, there was a folder store the trace file that can let us know what is the related attribute included when we perform an event by clicking a button. This trace file is keep trace the event that we perform according to the users ID that we use for testing. In this trace file, we can know which field had occurred errors, for example we had key in the information in the field and we found that got error occur when we try to save it. If this happened, we can go trace file and find out which data field had occurred error. This is very useful because we can easily and quickly find out the field that had occurred error and can fix it. Every time we click a button for example like save, next confirm and others, then the trace file will keep track what is the data included and where the data store. Week 4 (From 22-6-09 to 30-6-09 ) In this week, I do the same tasks like what had I done last 3 weeks. Week 1 (From 1-7-09 to 10-7-09) In this week, they are giving me a task about documentation. All I have to do is print screen all the modules or sub modules of the system and paste those capture screens in Microsoft word. After that, I have to briefly explain what is the condition and name of each of the modules. This documentation is do for users to let them understand the condition of those modules and how to perform their task by using those modules in the system. I have to briefly explain the steps, what those conditions are, and what the modules can perform. I also have to briefly explain the selections or actions that the modules have. Actually this documentation is do for those users to understand what is the use of the modules and how they can perform their task like key in details, date, and other information by using the system. Week 2 (From 13-7-09 to 17-7-09) In this week, they teach me how to use the software, name iSeries Navigator. This is software that can connect to our server and it is also link to database. In this software, there is many function that related to network, databases, file system, backup, and some basic operations. They briefly explain to me about what those important functions are and what the purpose of doing those functions. After that, they giving me a task to do, it is about run Sql script and retrieves and check data. The first step I have to do is write my Sql script in excel according to the condition that I need. After that, they give me a condition and i have to write update and insert Sql script in excel. After finish write, I have to make sure that those Sql statement is correct before run the Sql script. When run Sql script, if got any errors, we can refer to the error messages and fix it. The purpose of doing the Sql script in excel is because we need to do a backup copy of the Sql script that we write or modify. Beside that, we also can use tis software to run some Sql statement to retrieve or check data that we need. In this week, I have learn more about the back end system which is RPG system SiPFS batch menu, I had learn this last few weeks ago, but this week is learn more command and know more about the system. Example of the useful or important commands like dspff= display file fields, call, and etc. After I enter some command like dspff lg8068i(files name), then the system will display the file fields from the library that store the file. For example the system will show out the fields name, length, position and text of the file we choose. The system will show all the fields name, length, position and text definition that using in the module. This mean if we change the interface of the modules, example like want to add more fields or update something, then we have to use tis system to add the fields that we need. Example like we wan modify the text fields length, we also need to modify using this system, change the length of the text that we want. After do any changes, then we have to gener ate the XML file again and replace it to the main server.
